Riga theatres

Riga culture life is not imaginable without theatres.Riga has several theatres. The first Latvian theatre performance in Riga (on June 2, 1868) was a local adaptation of a play called Jeppe of the Mountain by the Danish author Ludvig Holberg staged under the title of Bērtulis, the Drunkard. After World War II, the Latvian theatre as the rest of Latvian culture was subjected to ideological pressures from the Soviet authorities and forced to resort to Aesop’s language. Theatres in Riga have well thought-out repertoire and a talented group of actors. Theatre performance still is a celebration for latvians, and any culture-respecting latvian citizen attend theater performances at least once a year, and popular actors are their favourite heroes.
